Nicole Kidman revealed that she asked her longtime friend Naomi Watts for permission before agreeing to play the wife of Liev Schreiber in "The Perfect Couple." Kidman, 57, and Watts, 55, have been close friends for over 30 years. During their friendship, Watts dated Schreiber, 56, from 2005 to 2016.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, teased on the outlet's Instagram on Saturday, September 7, Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber discussed how Kidman consulted Naomi Watts before agreeing to play Schreiber's onscreen wife in the upcoming Netflix limited series.
Schreiber began the conversation by mentioning he had "heard a story" about Kidman asking Watts for her approval to have a romantic role with him in the show, to which Kidman enthusiastically replied, "Of course!"
Kidman's candid response earned admiration from Spotlight actor Liev Schreiber, who praised their close friendship, saying, "Isn't that amazing? That's how close they are."
The two star as Greer and Tag Winbury, an ultra-wealthy couple caught in a murder mystery as one of their children plans a wedding in Nantucket, Massachusetts.
The series is a TV adaptation of Elin Hilderbrand’s popular novel The Perfect Couple.
During the interview, Nicole Kidman revealed that she had to "chase" Liev Schreiber to get him to accept the role alongside her. “I had to beg him to marry me,” joked Kidman, who has been married to Keith Urban since 2006 and shares two daughters, Sunday Rose, 16, and Faith Margaret, 13, with the singer. Turning to Schreiber, she added, “You’re a little hard to get. You needed to be chased.”
Schreiber, who shares two children, Sasha, 17, and Kai, 15, with ex-partner Naomi Watts, has maintained a strong and supportive coparenting relationship with her. Recently married to Taylor Neisen in July 2023, Schreiber also has a 1-year-old daughter, Hazel, with Neisen. He was last seen spending time with Watts and Sasha, as shown in a series of family selfies Watts posted on Instagram on June 22.
Regarding Naomi Watts' involvement in The Perfect Couple casting process, the actress confirmed to Entertainment Weekly at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday, September 8, that Nicole Kidman did indeed reach out to her before agreeing to star alongside Liev Schreiber.
“We always check in, we’re besties,” Naomi Watts told Entertainment Weekly, expressing appreciation for Nicole Kidman’s thoughtfulness. "That was very kind of her to do that."
Watts, who married Billy Crudup in June 2023, also mentioned her excitement about watching The Perfect Couple. "I’m desperate to [watch it] because everyone is raving about it," she said. "I’ve seen the trailer. It looks fantastic, and I’m very much looking forward to it."
