16. A fruity smell on your breath:
The presence of a fruity smell on your breath can serve as a warning sign of diabetes, indicating dangerously high blood sugar levels. There are two blood sugar-related causes associated with this fruity odor.
Firstly, Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening condition that requires urgent medical intervention. It occurs when the body produces high levels of ketones, which are normal blood acids. However, elevated blood sugar levels can trigger excessive production of ketones. If left untreated, DKA can be fatal, but immediate treatment has no lasting effects on the body. Permanent damage may occur if DKA progresses without intervention. Although rare, if you have high blood sugar and are not receiving treatment, DKA may develop. Symptoms of DKA include stomach pain, nausea, fever, vomiting, and fatigue. In its advanced stages, DKA can lead to a coma. Approximately 31% of cases involving fruity breath symptoms are identified as DKA.

Secondly, Hyperglycemic Hyperosmolar Syndrome (HHS) is a serious condition that primarily affects individuals with Type 2 diabetes. It is characterized by symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, vomiting, frequent urination, and a fruity odor on the breath. Although not common, HHS can rapidly manifest and requires emergency medical care to prevent lasting complications or death. About 34% of cases presenting fruity breath symptoms are attributed to HHS. Another cause of fruity breath odor, occurring in approximately 34% of reported cases, is liver failure.
