1. Excessive Consumption of Red Meat

Red meat is known for its protein content, but consuming too much of it can increase the risk of kidney disease. A study published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology examined the long-term effects of red meat consumption and found a connection between high red meat intake and an elevated risk of kidney failure. Conducted by Dr. Woon-Puay Koh, the study tracked 63,257 adults in Singapore over an average of 15.5 years and revealed a 40% higher risk of developing end-stage renal disease (ESRD) among those with the highest red meat consumption.

Overindulging in red meat can lead to the production of waste products that harm kidney filtration and overall health. The proteins present in red meat generate by-products that strain kidney function. When these proteins break down, they release a compound called urea. Excessive urea buildup can contribute to kidney damage, especially if the kidneys are already weakened.

Red meats like beef, pork, and lamb also contain higher amounts of saturated fats and cholesterol compared to other meats. This can elevate cholesterol levels, worsen heart disease, and increase the risk of renal artery disease.

To mitigate these risks, Dr. Koh suggests limiting weekly red meat consumption and opting for fish, shellfish, poultry, or plant-based protein alternatives like soy and legumes. The American Institute for Cancer Research recommends a weekly red meat intake of no more than 18 ounces.
