Philip achieved widespread fame through his portrayal of detective Ricardo Tubbs in the popular 1980s series Miami Vice. His five-year tenure on the show earned him a Golden Globe nomination. However, his foray into the music industry with the release of his album "Living the Book of My Life" in 1986, under his own record label Spaceship Records, did not yield any successful singles. Despite his success on screen, Philip's musical endeavors did not reach the same level of acclaim.

Despite Thomas's efforts to pursue a music career, his albums failed to gain traction and achieve success. However, he found success in lending his voice to video games such as Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Vice City Stories. On the personal front, Thomas married Kassandra Thomas in 1986, and they welcomed five children into their family: Noble, Kharisma, Sovereign, Sacred, and Imaj. Unfortunately, the couple divorced in 1998. Additionally, Thomas has six other children from previous relationships, namely Sacha, Khrishna, India, Gabriel, Chayenne, and Melody.
